2016 Construction Season Projects (Updated 9/26/16)
Permanent Patch: Removing existing pavement, recompacting, and repaving small sections of trenches and settled/potholed roadways.
Crack sealing: Preventative maintenance work to prevent further deterioration of road surfaces by sealing cracks with an asphalt-fiber compound.
Drainage Structure Rebuild: Repairing catch basins and drain manholes that are structurally deficient or partially collapsed.
Mill and Overlay Paving: Selective sections (up to 300-feet) of deteriorated pavement is rehabilitated by cold planing (removing the top surface of pavement) and repaving. The purpose of mill and overlay is to prolong the life of the roadway.
Sidewalk Repair: Includes the selective repair of sections of deteriorated sidewalk panels and ADA improvements (handicapped ramps).
Catch Basin Cleaning: Removal of accumulated sediments from catch basins to prevent flooding and protect stormwater.
Line Painting: Painting of crosswalks, centerlines, stop lines, and other road features.
Edenfield/Hovey Street Water Main Replacement Project: This project will replace old water mains on Edenfield and Hovey Streets and will include new water services from the main to the curb stop. This project is complete.
Springfield/Forest Street Neighborhood Water Main Replacement Project: This project will replace old water mains on sections of Springfield Street, Forest Street, Malden Street, and Everett Street, to improve fire flows and water pressures in the neighborhood. This project is complete.
Burnham/Chandler Street Neighborhood Water Main Replacement Project: This project will replace old water mains on sections of Burnham Street, Bridgham Street, and Chandler Street, to improve fire flows and water pressures in the neighborhood.
As approved by the Town Council, the following roads will be reconstructed during the 2016 construction season:
- Hillside Road (Belmont Street to Hillcrest Circle)
- Hillcrest Circle
- Grenville Road
- Merrill Road
- Purvis Street
- Edenfield Avenue (Main Street to Warren Street)
Road reconstruction includes: upgrade of substandard water services from the water main to curb stop to copper pipe, road reclamation and regrading, curb installation, concrete sidewalk, driveway apron, and handicapped reconstruction, paving, and tree plantings.
Arsenal Street Reconstruction: As part of the redevelopment of 58 Irving Street and 202-204 Arsenal Street, the developer is reconstructing Arsenal Street, from Irving Street to Louise Street. Included in the work is: new signalization at Irving Street, Beechwood Avenue, and the site driveway; extension of the Watertown Community Path, from its current terminus at Louise Street to Irving Street; installation of new street lighting on the north side of the street; traffic calming elements; reconstruction of north side sidewalks; and mill and overlay of the road surface.
Nichols Ave. Traffic Calming: As part of the redevelopment of 490 Arsenal Way, the developer is reconstructing Nichols Ave. along the site frontage. Included in the work is: curb extensions at the intersection of Bigelow Ave. and Nichols Ave.; a raised table at the intersection of Elton Ave. and Nichols Ave.; construction of a sidewalk on the south side of Nichols Ave., from Elton Ave. towards Arlington Street; and mill and overlay of the road. Also included in the work are a raised crosswalk at the intersection of Bigelow Ave. and Artsakh Way, and a speed hump on Elton Ave. near St. Stephens School.
Municipal Lot Drainage Improvements: As part of the redevelopment of 20 Summer Street, the developer is installing sub-surface infiltration systems in sections of the municipal parking lot.
The Town has worked closely with National Grid to coordinate repair of gas mains in Watertown this season.
