Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO)
On January 7, 2022, 314 CMR 16.00: Notification Requirements to Promote Public Awareness of Sewage Pollution was put into effect, and subsequently amended on January 21, 2022, by the State of Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP).
MassDEP developed these regulations to make sure the public knows when untreated, blended or partially treated sewage flows into Massachusetts waters through a Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO).
As required by this regulation, The City of Watertown shall notify the public of any SSO that occurs and directly affects a water body within the community.
