The goals of this project are to encourage elementary school students to walk and bike to school, and enhance safety for all users by providing a safe path of travel in the project area. The project is being funded through the Safe Routes to School Program, a federally funded initiative of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT), in collaboration with the Town of Watertown.
The project seeks to implement the recommendations of the Hosmer Safe Routes to School Assessment performed by MassDOT in 2015. The report and its findings were based on information submitted by school, DPW, and DCDP staff, as well as field visits and observations of student behavior. The assessment provides improvement recommendations including the reconstruction of sidewalks, crosswalks, and signage on Boylston Street and School Street, between Chauncey Street and Fairfield Street.
