Business Certificates

Conducting Business in Watertown

Anyone conducting business in Watertown under a name other than their own or corporate name must file a Business Certificate with the City Clerk's office. This form is commonly known as a "doing business as" or "DBA" certificate.

Owners must come to City Hall in person with valid photo ID and complete an application in person. Applications are only available to be completed in person in the office.

Business Certificate Cost

The certified copy of the Business Certificate costs $50 for four years. After the four years the certificate dissolves and it can be renewed at that time. Please be sure to make your payment with cash or check payable to the "City of Watertown." You can also pay by credit card.

Filing a Business Certificate

The DBA files allow consumers to identify and locate the proprietor of a business, which goes by a name other than that of the proprietor. The filing of a DBA Certificate also serves as notice that the filer claims the exclusive use of the name contained in the certificate. Once filed, a certificate is valid for four years.

The General Laws of Massachusetts

Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 110 section 5 states that any person conducting business in the Commonwealth under any title other than the real name of the person conducting the business, whether individually or as a partnership, shall file (a certificate) in the office of the clerk of every city or town where an office of any such person or partnership may be situated.
